.edu was originally RESERVED for higher learning institutions. My prep school applied for one in the late 90's but could not get one because they were not at the university level. I do, however, believe that the reservation was lifted a while ago in order to get more usage out of that extension. There may still be restrictions on the content of the site (I don't think you want to find
pornschool.edu in there).
