I tried to transfer a domain one time by letting it expire and then re-registering. It didn't work. The day after the supposed expiration, gleaned from the renewal notices being recieved from the registrar, I was unable to register the name as a new acquire. But I could renew it as the previous owner.
Did you have to pay a penalty? Usually when they have that grace period they charge an obscene amount of money to keep the domain. In some cases I have seen $80 or more.

Anyways, I just let another domain slide to the expiration date with GoDaddy, and I had no trouble renewing it.

I think your right about that Deelip, because after the actual expiration date passes you have an X amount number of days to renew or take chance of someone taking it out from under you. Your best policy is to renew a month before expiration.
