Content violations are probably at the top of the list. Adult sites would be part of that category.

Thanks for this response. I was wondering the same thing. I had no idea what would cause a ban. If someone purchases the domain and changes the content, would google re-evaluate the content and lift the ban on the domain?

Other reasons for being banned would include:
illegal content (e.g. child porn)
reported content (in order to avoid legal disputes, or to please the government, google will sometimes remove sites)
spamming
click fraud through adsense

No, sites are not automatically reevaluated in order to be added back into the Google index.

If you're site was banned, Google will probably not give you a reason. However, you can probably guess it. When you have fixed your site, you can submit your site for reconsideration.

I have found this thread very interesting. If a domain is banned by Google do they notify the site owner that it is banned or do you just have to work it out?

I am pretty sure you get told but not necessarily the reasons why. How deep will google dig into your site? And dumb question: if something is banned on google, can you just take it to other search engines and be approved? Why do you think the #2 is?

I can't see any of the listed violations being acceptable on other search engines, other than legal adult content, and there are specialty search engines for that category.

I think that Google can ban sites if they get reports from other sites... Even from people that are your competitors, you might get reported and banned.

That's a pretty cool site. Thanks for linking to it. I hope others run across it and use it before purchasing domains they know nothing about.

I was looking for something like this but......

when I typed in the domain with www.sitename.com its banned

with http://sitename.com
not banned and it shows me links in google. And I know for a fact that site is banned because text links were sold and its against google TOS. How come the two different results?
