or to go to elance.com and get someone.

but the specs seemed kinda hazy...

If you're just starting out the free services are exceptable. Once you get used to building a site you might want a paid service with just a a few exceptions. They more benefits to you and there are some things you able to do. More space and more options as well.

I think template services are a great solution for the first time site builder. You learn but you eventually move on. It's a great process to go through because you really start to understand the benefits of either getting more heavily into designs ...or not as the case may be.
