Possibilities of getting an .edu ? - llegent - 07-06-2006

Hi experts, I noticed that there might be some "ways" in landing an .edu domain as individual! Yes I am surprise of this too, and still searching for more information in this area. To what I know so far, .edu is only for educational institution isn't it?? or I have been lagging, and didn't update my eyesight yet??

Is this just a rumuor or it is happening somewhere? somehow? anyone got idea?

As far as I am aware, edu is for educational instititions (officially 4-year degree granting institutions). Generally, edu is controlled by the main university of the country. If you wish to apply for a domain, you should ask them.

.edu was originally RESERVED for higher learning institutions. My prep school applied for one in the late 90's but could not get one because they were not at the university level. I do, however, believe that the reservation was lifted a while ago in order to get more usage out of that extension. There may still be restrictions on the content of the site (I don't think you want to find pornschool.edu in there). Cool

I tried to do a quick search to see if I could find any authoratative answer on this unforutnately all I came up with where scores of references to RFC 920, which does not specifically address the requirements for a .edu domain. I have heard, as others here mentioned, that it is highly controlled and reserved only for educational institutions.
